A stronghold used during ancient wars and kingdoms.
Sankagiri Fort:
Located 38 km from Salem, this is a massive military complex built on a single hill.
Architecture: The fort has 10 levels of gates. Each level has its own unique defense mechanism, including narrow passages where only one person could pass at a time, making it easy to defend against large armies.
The Tipu Connection: While built by the Vijayanagara Empire, it was significantly strengthened by Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan. You can still see the British-era cemetery at the base and the ancient granaries (storage rooms) at the top.
The Climb: It takes about 1.5 to 2 hours to reach the summit. At the top, there is a temple for Lord Varadaraja Perumal.
